The United Nations has reported that over half of Yemeni households are not getting enough food due to severe economic conditions and a months-long halt in food assistance to millions in the north of the country.
On Monday, the World Food Program (WFP) highlighted that “severe food deprivation” has reached unprecedented levels in parts of northern Yemen, including Al Jawf, Al Bayda, Hajjah, Amran, and Al Hodeidah.
The WFP had to stop food assistance in these areas in December due to funding limitations and disagreements with authorities over the program’s scale.
Yemen’s civil war, ongoing since 2014, has ravaged the country’s economy, disrupting exports and devaluing the local currency, with a Saudi-led coalition intervening in 2015, aiming to reinstate the government.
The humanitarian crisis in Yemen remains dire, with the UN calling for increased international support to address the worsening hunger and economic challenges faced by millions in the war-torn country.
