Turkey: 100-year-old mosque’s minaret survives as water submerges entire village

The İhlas News Agency published footage showing the complete submersion of the village of Karakurt in Kars Province, Turkey, and the evacuation of the village after the Karakurt Dam retained the waters.

The village, which used to have around 200 houses and historical buildings, was entirely submerged, leaving only the mosque’s minaret visible above the water’s surface.

Former villagers gathered around the lake to witness this poignant scene, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of their village and cherished memories.

They voiced their regret over the drowning of their village, saying, “This is our village, Karakurt. All that remains of the village is the mosque. The entire village is underwater, and only the minaret of the mosque is visible.”

Turkish media reported that with the closing of the Karakurt Dam gates in spring, the waters submerged trees and historical buildings in the village, leaving only the minaret of the 100-year-old mosque.
