Cholera cases rapidly increasing across Yemen, UNICEF warns

UNICEF announced that cholera cases in Yemen have been rapidly increasing recently, approaching nearly 60,000 cases since the beginning of 2024.

The UN agency said in an official statement: “According to the Ministry of Health, 59,000 cases of cholera/Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD) have been reported since the beginning of 2024.”

UNICEF recently reported in a joint report with the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Cluster that the number of cases reported by health authorities reached 37,977 suspected cases of cholera in all Yemeni governorates since the beginning of the year until May 19.

According to the new statistics, more than 21,000 new cases of cholera have been recorded in the past two weeks, indicating a daily rate of around 1,400 new infections, which is a concerning number.
