The city of El Fasher in North Darfur is on the brink of a humanitarian disaster as clashes escalate between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and groups aligned with the Sudanese army, The Guardian said in a new report.
The RSF has been besieging El Fasher for months, trapping approximately one million people in the last major population center in Darfur not under paramilitary control, the report added.
Local doctors described the situation as characterized by deaths from preventable causes, acute malnutrition, miscarriages, and a respiratory disease suspected to be linked to pollution from the ongoing shelling.
The lack of medicines and funding exacerbates the crisis, leaving residents with no means of income and minimal assistance from the international community, they added.
El Fasher, a humanitarian hub for Darfur, hosts a large population of internally displaced people, including those affected by ethnic violence over the past two decades.
International aid groups and western governments have urged the RSF to refrain from attacking El Fasher, fearing a large-scale massacre. However, the situation remains precarious, with clashes intensifying and civilian casualties rising.
