Amnesty International called on Wednesday for the adoption of a historic treaty on legal cooperation between countries regarding crimes specified in international law, including genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, to help provide new tools in achieving justice and ensure better protection of human rights.
The organization said in a statement seen by Shia Waves Agency, “Conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and other areas underscore the urgent need to strengthen the framework of international law through developments such as this treaty, which should receive the broadest possible international support.”
It emphasized that “as an initial step towards implementing the convention, a group of countries will sign the treaty, which provides additional means to achieve justice for victims of crimes under international law, as well as in cases of torture and enforced disappearance, recognizing their rights, including their right to protection, seek compensation, and obtain it.”
The organization pointed out that “by facilitating legal cooperation between countries, this agreement strengthens national judicial systems, enabling countries to better fulfill their duty to seek accountability against all individuals who have committed serious violations of international law, while also ensuring that there are fewer safe havens for individuals suspected of criminal responsibility, representing a significant step forward in combating impunity.”
The organization urged “all countries to swiftly complete the process of adopting the treaty without reservations, so that its benefits can be achieved quickly and fully,” stating that “this represents a significant improvement in the prosecution of these crimes, the ability to achieve justice, uncover the truth, and provide compensation to victims.”
