Millions of plastic pellets have washed up on the shores of a beach in Spain, causing concern among environmentalists, Reuters said in an article it published on Monday.
The pellets are used to produce items, such as water bottles and shopping bags and are known to add to the problem of plastic making its way into the world’s oceans and rivers.
The millions washed up in Spain came from at least one container that fell off the coast of neighbouring Portugal last month, the pellets’ manufacturer Bedeko Europe said in a statement, Reuters added.
An estimated 10 trillion plastic pellets contaminate marine ecosystems every year, a 2020 report by the Pew Charitable Trusts found.
The incident highlights the ongoing problem of plastic pollution in the oceans and the need for companies to take responsibility for their plastic waste.
