Twenty-two people, including 20 children, were killed in an airstrike by Myanmar’s military on a school in the village of Oe Htein Kone in the northwestern Sagaing region, news outlets reported. The attack, which occurred on Monday, came despite a ceasefire declared by the military following the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake on March 28 that killed around 3,800 people.
A local teacher, speaking anonymously, confirmed the death toll and said two educators were among the victims. “We tried to move the children to safety, but the plane was too fast and dropped bombs,” she said. The regional education authorities have verified the casualties.
Myanmar has been in civil conflict since the military coup in 2021, facing resistance from anti-junta groups and ethnic militias. Despite the military’s announced April ceasefire for post-quake recovery, attacks on civilians have persisted, raising international concern over escalating violence.
