The world marks the International Day for Countering Hate Speech on June 18 each year, an annual United Nations observance aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of hate speech and its harmful impact on societies.

The occasion seeks to mobilize international efforts to promote tolerance, respect and peaceful coexistence among peoples, cultures and religions.

This year’s observance comes amid growing concern over the spread of hate speech across digital spaces and social media platforms. The rise of misinformation, incitement and discriminatory content targeting individuals and communities on the basis of religion, ethnicity, language or cultural identity has increased pressure on governments, institutions and technology companies to act.

The United Nations has warned that hate speech poses a growing threat to social peace, community cohesion and global stability, especially as digital technologies and artificial intelligence continue to develop rapidly.

This year’s focus highlights the role of media and information literacy in countering hate speech in the digital age. UNESCO has emphasized the importance of strengthening critical thinking and digital literacy skills to reduce the spread of inciting and hateful content online.

Dr. Ibrahim bin Saleh al-Nuaimi, chairman of the Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue, said hate speech is a dangerous phenomenon that threatens the stability and cohesion of societies. He warned that inciting words can turn into violent acts, undermine public security and deepen conflicts and divisions.

Al-Nuaimi also stressed the importance of dialogue among religions and cultures as a key tool in confronting hate speech and strengthening mutual respect.

Educational expert Hussein al-Yafei said Islam rejects hate speech and incitement, and calls for respect for human dignity, constructive dialogue and mutual understanding among peoples and cultures. He highlighted the role of religious and educational institutions in promoting moral values and confronting extremism and hatred.

Media and communication experts also called for stronger information literacy to help people verify information and resist misleading news and inflammatory content. They said social media platforms and technology companies carry major responsibility for limiting the spread of hate speech and ensuring a safer digital environment that respects human diversity.
