Indonesian rescuers discover 11 Rohingya dead after boat incident: UN

UN officials confirmed that at least eleven bodies of Rohingya refugees were found off Indonesia’s western coast after their boat, carrying around 150 people, capsized, TRTWorld reported.

Indonesian rescuers called off the search after rescuing 75 people, despite reports of more being swept away, the article added.

The mostly-Muslim ethnic Rohingya, heavily persecuted in Myanmar, often risk their lives on dangerous sea journeys to reach Malaysia or Indonesia.

From mid-November to late January, 1,752 Rohingya refugees, mostly women and children, landed in the Indonesian provinces of Aceh and North Sumatra, according to the UNHCR.
