The Indian Muslim female activist and politician Fatima Kaniz was able to retain her seat in the Indian Parliament after winning the Karnataka state elections over her rival from the ruling Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party, after she actively fought to defend the rights of Muslim women.
According to Indian media outlets, followed by Shia Waves Agency, “Fatima Kaniz, the candidate of the Indian National Congress party, received (80,973 votes) and won a seat in the Parliament against her rival Chandrakant Patel of the Hindu party, who received (78,261 votes)”.
Media outlets quoted Kaniz as saying that she would “work to lift the ban on wearing the hijab for girls in schools and universities,” which was previously banned by her fierce rival in the elections when he was serving as Minister of Education.
Fatima Kaniz has led mass protests to defend the right of women to wear the hijab as a fundamental right within their legitimate religious rights.
The National Congress party, to which Kaniz belongs, won the Indian parliamentary elections with (135 seats), while the Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (66 seats), the Janata Dal Party (19 seats) and (4 seats) went to other Indian parties.
