India: Uttar Pradesh Assembly Descends into Chaos Over Muslim Women’s Reservation Bill Debate

The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly erupted in chaos on Thursday as lawmakers clashed during discussions on the Women’s Reservation Bill, Muslim Mirror reported. The debate quickly turned into a heated confrontation over calls for sub‑quotas for backward classes, Dalits, and Muslim women within the proposed framework.

Leader of Opposition Lal Bihari Yadav criticized the government’s approach, accusing them of presenting the bill misleadingly. He demanded equal rights for marginalized groups, including Muslim women, and questioned why the previous women’s reservation law had not been fully implemented. “This is not charity. We want rights,” Yadav declared.

As the debate grew increasingly intense, members from both sides raised slogans and gathered near the well of the House, leading to a brief disruption. Speaker Satish Mahana had to intervene to restore order.
