Arrest of Muslim Man in India for Remarks Against Prime Minister

A 20-year-old Muslim man, Mohammad Rizvi, was arrested in Darbhanga, Bihar, for allegedly using abusive language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a political rally, Muslim Mirror reported. The arrest followed a complaint from the local BJP district president, Aditya Narayan Choudhary, after a video of the incident surfaced online.

The arrest in India for verbal dissent against a political leader highlights the ongoing debate about the boundaries of free speech. India’s Constitution guarantees the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression under Article 19, but this right is subject to “reasonable restrictions” on grounds such as public order, decency, and defamation. Critics of such laws, including sedition and criminal defamation, argue they are often used to suppress criticism and dissent.

Such attitudes stand in sharp contrast with the treatment of political dissent under the Governance of the Holy Prophet and Amir al-Mo’mineen Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon them both and their pure family).

While the Holy Prophet held both religious and political authority, historical accounts suggest he was open to criticism. For instance, in the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, he faced dissent from his followers who felt the terms were unfavorable, but he responded by explaining the rationale behind his decision rather than punishing them. Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon them both) was known for his strict sense of justice and his tolerance of criticism from his opponents, including the Kharijites, a group that had initially been his supporters but later rebelled against him. He is widely cited for his words on the importance of free speech.
