A massive rescue operation is in progress in the village of Dharali, located in India’s Uttarakhand state, after a cloudburst triggered a mudslide and flash floods, Anadolu Agency reported. The incident, which occurred on a Tuesday, has left around 100 people missing, with authorities confirming four deaths.
The Indian Army is leading the rescue efforts, deploying additional personnel, tracker dogs, drones, and earthmoving equipment to accelerate the search for survivors. Army and Air Force helicopters are also being used to deliver essential supplies, medicine, and to evacuate residents to higher ground as incessant rains have caused water levels to rise.
Both the state’s chief minister and India’s prime minister have commented on the situation, assuring that all possible efforts are being made to assist those affected. Television footage from the area shows significant devastation, with concrete houses and roads swept away by the mudslide.
