Transport Emissions Remain Key Driver of Delhi’s Air Pollution Crisis
……………………

Delhi-NCR continues to face hazardous air pollution year-round, with the situation worsening during winter, according to a new report published in Indian PSU. While multiple factors contribute to poor air quality, transport emissions are among the most significant yet underestimated sources. Experts estimate vehicular emissions account for 40% to 80% of Delhi’s pollution, influenced by vehicle age, fuel type, and road congestion.

According to the report, public transport usage in Delhi has declined to below 50%, despite rising daily trips among the nearly 40 million people in the region. This has increased road traffic and emissions. A major concern is the disparity between pollution sources and those most affected—while the majority use non-polluting transport like walking or public transit, they remain most exposed to emissions.

Interstate vehicles, especially commercial ones from neighboring states, contribute disproportionately to pollutants like NOx and carbon monoxide. Experts stress the need for solutions including Low-Emission Zones (LEZs), improved infrastructure for walking and cycling, and phasing out outdated vehicles in favor of cleaner alternatives like BS-VI or electric vehicles.

Health experts warn of the long-term impact, linking polluted air to chronic illnesses and premature death. Addressing Delhi’s air crisis requires coordinated policy action, investment in public transport, emissions regulation, and greater public awareness to shift behaviors.
