Kolkata witnessed a protest rally denouncing the increasing harassment of Bengali-speaking people in several Indian states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Kashmir Media Service reported. The march, organized by the CPI(M), was led by Politburo member and West Bengal State Secretary Md. Salim. Starting from the Lenin Statue in Esplanade, the rally concluded at Ramlila Park near Moulali.
Md. Salim criticized the BJP for targeting Bengali-speaking citizens, accusing the party of labeling them as illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators. He linked these actions to the upcoming Assembly elections in Bihar and West Bengal, calling them part of BJP’s strategy to polarize voters. Salim also raised concerns over the Election Commission’s special revision of voter lists, which he said risks classifying Bengali speakers as ‘doubtful voters.’
Emphasizing that internal migration is a constitutional right, Salim urged the Modi government to protect migrant laborers and economically vulnerable groups from such harassment and ensure their social security.
