India braces for intense summer with more heatwaves

India is expected to face hotter-than-usual temperatures this summer, with an increase in heatwave days, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) warned. The forecast predicts “above-normal” maximum temperatures across most of the country from April to June, a period when temperatures often exceed 45°C (113°F).

IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said eastern India could experience up to 10 heatwave days or more, compared to the usual four to seven. Prolonged heat exposure poses risks to vulnerable populations, including infants, the elderly, and outdoor workers, with health impacts ranging from heat stress to organ failure.

Urban areas are particularly affected due to heat-absorbing infrastructure. Extreme heat can also strain power grids and transport systems. The IMD urged authorities to implement heat action plans, including cooling centers and advisories. India experienced its longest heatwave last year, and experts link increasing heat extremes to climate change.
