India’s Supreme Court to Review Judge’s Controversial Speech

India’s Supreme Court has announced it will review a contentious speech by Judge Shekhar Kumar Yadav, who claimed the country would operate according to the wishes of the Hindu majority, VOA reported yesterday. The speech, delivered at a December 8 event organized by the Vishva Hindu Parishad, has sparked calls for Yadav’s impeachment.

Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna stated that the court would examine details surrounding the speech, which has drawn criticism for its perceived communal bias. Former Supreme Court Justice Madan Lokur described Yadav’s remarks as “unworthy of any judge.”

Yadav has previously made controversial statements, including remarks on cow protection and derogatory comments about Muslims. Activists and legal experts argue that his views undermine judicial impartiality and violate constitutional principles of equality and secularism. The Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms has urged an inquiry into Yadav’s conduct, emphasizing the need to uphold public trust in the judiciary.
