India: United Muslim Forum Condemns Violence Against Muslims
The United Muslim Forum (UMF), comprising religious leaders from Hyderabad, has condemned a series of attacks on Muslims across India, highlighting that this violence persists during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term, The Hindu reported yesterday.
Key members of UMF expressed disappointment over the treatment of Muslims post-recent parliamentary elections. They criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for exacerbating the issues faced in the past decade, despite hopes for improvement.
The UMF also denounced directives from Uttar Pradesh’s Yogi Adityanath government requiring restaurant owners’ names to be displayed along the Kanwar Yatra route, which they argue jeopardizes the livelihoods of many Muslim traders.
They pointed out the disparity in enforcement, noting that while festivities are celebrated with grandeur, actions are taken against Muslim worshippers during significant events. Additionally, they condemned comments made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma regarding the Muslim population in the state.
