India: Deadly Clash Between Police, Militants in Assam Leave 3 Dead

In a clash between police and militants in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, at least three militants were killed on Wednesday, Xinhua reported yesterday.

The gunfight broke out in Bhuban Hills of Cachar district, about 330 km from the state capital Dispur.

According to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the police operation resulted in the deaths of three Hmar militants from Assam and the neighboring state of Manipur. Two AK rifles, another rifle, and a pistol were also recovered from the site.

Three policemen were reported wounded in the standoff and have been hospitalized. The gunfight was triggered after police cordoned off the area based on intelligence about the presence of militants in the region.
