Nine Hindu Pilgrims Killed in Militant Attack in India’s Jammu
At least nine Hindu pilgrims were killed and 33 injured when a bus plunged into a deep gorge after a suspected militant attack in the Indian territory of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, Reuters reported.
The attack came as Prime Minister Narendra Modi took oath for a record-equalling third term, drawing criticism from the opposition Congress party.
According to Mohita Sharma, the district police chief, the militants ambushed the bus and fired at it indiscriminately, causing the bus to fall into the gorge. The Himalayan region has seen militant violence since an anti-Indian insurgency began in 1989, though attacks have decreased in recent years.
