Severe Heatwave Strikes India, Killing Over 100, Sickening Thousands
India has been grappling with an unusually intense heatwave this summer, with temperatures reaching as high as 50°C (122°F) in some regions, Reuters reported yesterday.
The scorching conditions are suspected to have killed over 100 people and made nearly 25,000 ill, the source mentioned citing local authorities and media.
The worst-affected areas include the eastern state of Odisha, where at least 30 people have died from heatstroke, as well as northern and western parts of the country. In contrast, other regions have faced heavy rains and floods, with 14 killed in the northeastern state of Assam due to a cyclone.
Experts attribute the extreme weather to a combination of factors, including climate change.
The heatwave is expected to continue in northern and eastern India over the next few days, as the country braces for the ongoing environmental challenges.
