Heatwave in India: At Least 33 Dead, Including Election Officials

A severe heatwave in India’s states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha has claimed at least 33 lives, including those of election officials on duty, Reuters reported yesterday.

Temperatures in the region reached record highs, with the capital Delhi recording its highest-ever temperature of 52.9°C (127.22°F), the source mentioned.

While the heatwave is expected to ease in the coming days in northwestern and central India, the scorching temperatures are likely to persist for two more days in the eastern parts of the country. The extreme heat has taken a toll on the election officials who were required to stand on duty outdoors for long hours during the ongoing national elections.

Authorities have urged caution and advised citizens to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities during the ongoing heatwave.
