India’s Press Freedom Ranking Plummets to 161st Place; Pak, Afghanistan Improve to 150, 152 Respectively
In the latest World Press Freedom Index, India’s ranking has dropped significantly to 161st place out of 180 countries, down from 150th position last year. This worrying decline reflects the ongoing challenges journalists and media outlets face in the world’s largest democracy, Muslim Mirror reported yesterday.
“Press freedom is a cornerstone of democracy, allowing for the free flow of information and the ability of journalists to hold those in power accountable,” the report states.
In contrast, India’s neighbors Pakistan and Afghanistan have seen improvements, rising to 150th and 152nd place respectively.
Experts attribute India’s decline to factors like digital censorship and safety concerns for journalists.
