India’s Phase 6 of Election Unfolds Amidst Accusations, Concerns

As India’s sixth phase of general elections unfolded on Saturday, the country’s top political rivals have accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of unfairly targeting them with criminal investigations, TRTWorld reported today.

Despite the concerns raised by the UN and rights groups over the election’s fairness, Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to secure a third term.

Turnout is down several percentage points from the last national poll in 2019, with analysts blaming hotter-than-average temperatures heading into the Indian summer.

More than 111 million voters were eligible to vote in the sixth phase, while over 1 million polling officials welcomed voters across 114,000 stations.

With Today’s polls, India will complete polling in 486 parliamentary constituencies out of 543 seats which are set to be elected through the general election.
