Nigerian Rights Group Urges Protection of Hijab Use in NYSC Uniform Reform

The Hijab Rights Initiative (HRAI) has called on the Nigerian government to ensure that the religious rights of Muslim women are protected as authorities consider reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform.

According to Muslim News Nigeria, the call comes amid discussions over replacing the traditional NYSC khaki uniform with locally produced Adire fabric. Although no final decision has been announced, HRAI said the proposed reform provides an opportunity to strengthen respect for religious freedom and inclusion.

The organization urged authorities to ensure that any new uniform policy officially allows Muslim female participants to wear the hijab and other clothing that complies with Islamic modesty requirements. It also called for participants to be permitted to wear the hijab throughout orientation camps and during their year of national service without facing discrimination, harassment, or unnecessary restrictions.

HRAI recommended that the NYSC establish clear guidelines for officials, provide training on religious rights, and create accessible complaint mechanisms for individuals who experience discrimination.

The group also called on the government to consult Muslim organizations, legal experts, and human rights advocates before implementing the reform, emphasizing the importance of reflecting Nigeria’s religious and cultural diversity.

The NYSC, established in 1973, requires Nigerian graduates to complete a compulsory one-year national service program aimed at promoting unity and social integration among young citizens.
