Anti‑Muslim Racism Surges in Switzerland; Discrimination Cases Reach Record Levels
——————————-
Racial discrimination in Switzerland has reached its highest levels on record, with hostility toward Muslims showing the steepest increase among all categories of bias, according to new data published by the Federal Commission against Racism and the human rights organisation humanrights.ch.
After a nearly 40 % rise in documented incidents in 2024—including hate speech, physical assaults, threats, and other discriminatory behaviour—cases have “stabilised at a high level,” officials said.
While discrimination against Black people (33 % of all cases) and general xenophobia (30 %) remain the most common forms of racial bias reported, anti‑Muslim incidents have increased sharply.
Authorities note that part of the increase may reflect improved reporting, as the Federation of Islamic Organisations in Switzerland joined the advisory network in 2025, giving Muslim communities a more direct channel to report discrimination. However, experts warn that many incidents remain unreported due to lack of awareness or trust in reporting centres.
Schools and workplaces are the most affected settings, with the education sector accounting for the largest share of reported cases at 22 %.
