Proposed Headscarf Ban for Muslim Teachers Sparks Debate in Switzerland
……………
A proposal by Switzerland’s right-wing Swiss People’s Party (SVP) to ban Muslim teachers from wearing headscarves in the canton of St. Gallen has ignited a nationwide debate over religious freedom and equality. The initiative seeks to prohibit “religious symbols expressed through clothing or accessories” in public schools, raising questions about neutrality and whether the rule would apply to all faiths equally.
Andrea Schick of the Socialist Party criticized the proposal as “a one-sided symbolic policy targeting Muslim women,” arguing that fairness would require banning Christian symbols such as crosses as well. The controversy follows similar disputes in other Swiss cantons, where some teachers have lost their jobs for wearing the hijab, while others allow students to wear it.
A 1997 federal ruling still permits schools to dismiss teachers for wearing headscarves. Critics say the policy remains unclear regarding Christian and Jewish symbols, while federal authorities insist the proposed ban applies to all religions, though implementation details remain undecided.
