A 54-year-old man has been arrested in Newmarket, Ontario, for allegedly threatening to bomb a local mosque and the home of a Muslim family, in what police are investigating as a hate crime. The York Regional Police announced that the threats were made on September 1 and reported to authorities two days later. The suspect now faces two charges of uttering threats.

According to the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), the man reportedly intended to use his expertise in HVAC systems to manipulate gas lines and cause an explosion. He allegedly shared his plans with another neighbor, who then alerted the authorities. The suspect had been living next to the targeted family for 14 years and was said to have consumed large volumes of anti-Muslim content online.

Omar Khamissa, NCCM’s Head of Community Engagement, read a statement from the targeted family expressing their fear and urging authorities to take protective measures. The mosque identified in the alleged plot also voiced deep concern over the incident, emphasizing the need for increased vigilance.

York Police Inspector Stu Garner confirmed that the investigation is being treated as a hate crime but withheld further details to preserve the integrity of the case. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation across Canada, with politicians and rights groups calling for urgent action to combat Islamophobia and rising far-right extremism.
