Muslim Girl Kicked Out of Karate Class for Wearing Hijab, Commission Seeks Settlement

The Quebec Human Rights Commission is seeking a $13,000 settlement on behalf of a 12-year-old Muslim girl who was asked to remove her hijab in order to participate in a karate class, Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.

The incident occurred at a Montreal karate studio, where the instructor said the hijab violated the uniform policy, making the girl leave in tears.

Karate Canada stated that head coverings are permitted in the sport. The Canadian Council of Muslim Women called the situation “very distressing” and a violation of the girl’s basic human rights.

The Commission said the plaintiffs felt a “feeling of injustice and exclusion” and remain concerned about the impact on their daughter. The case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Muslim youth seeking to participate in sports while maintaining their religious practices.
