Bangladesh Refuses New Rohingya Refugees Fleeing Myanmar Violence

Bangladesh refuses to accept more Rohingya refugees escaping renewed fighting in Myanmar, Arab News reported yesterday.

This follows mounting concerns that a war between Myanmar’s junta and the opposition ethnic-minority Arakan Army would trigger a new wave of refugees seeking safety in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Refugee authorities have cited concerns about overwhelming existing camps, already housing over a million Rohingya who fled persecution in 2017.

Reports indicate Rohingya are gathering near the Bangladesh border as clashes between Myanmar’s military and insurgents escalate.

Bangladesh, however, maintains it cannot handle another influx and urges Myanmar to ensure the safety of its Rohingya population.

This comes as the UN warns of dwindling humanitarian aid for existing refugees.
