Lithuanian authorities have launched an investigation after a group of motorcyclists gathered near Kaunas Mosque during Friday prayers, creating loud noise and displaying a pig’s head in an incident that Muslim community members described as a provocation.

Around 100 motorcyclists gathered near Kaunas Mosque and Ramybės Park on Friday, 11 September, while Muslims were performing Friday prayers. Reports said the group revved motorcycle engines, played loud music, and chanted slogans near the mosque.

Videos circulated online showed one participant holding up a pig’s head near the mosque, a gesture viewed by members of the Muslim community as offensive and deliberately provocative. Despite the tension, no major physical clashes were reported between the group and worshippers.

Kaunas police said they opened a criminal investigation into possible incitement against a religious group and interference with religious practices after reviewing video footage and receiving reports about the incident. Authorities also began administrative proceedings over the unauthorized gathering.

The incident has renewed discussions in Lithuania over the protection of religious communities and places of worship from acts of intimidation or hate-related provocation. Kaunas Mosque, built in the early 1930s, is the only brick-built mosque in Lithuania and is recognized as a protected cultural heritage site.
