Grand Ayatollah Shirazi: Infallibles held mourning for Aba Abdillah during first ten-days of Muharram

The daily scholarly meeting of Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Sadegh Hosseini Shirazi was held on Monday, 19 Muharram 1445. In this session, like the previous meetings, the Marja answered the questions of the attendees about various jurisprudence issues.

Regarding the reason for holding mourning for Seyyed al-Shohada, peace be upon him, during the first ten days of Muharram, Grand Ayatollah Shirazi mentioned that the question was answered by Sayyid Ibn Tawoos, may God Almighty bless his soul, and other scholars before him: that the mourning for Sayyed al-Shohada, peace be upon him, is different from any other mourning, even from the rest of the Innocents, peace be upon them.

Referring to the hadith of the Holy Prophet, who said, “The Book of God and My Itrah, my Family”, his eminence emphasized that the Itrah would start mourning for the Master of the Martyrs, peace be upon him, from the first day of Muharram, and the Day of Ashura marked the peak of their mourning.

Referring to several traditions that emphasize that the mourning of Sayyid al-Shohda should be held throughout the year, Grand Ayatullah Shirazi said: this way of holding mourning is one of the exclusive characteristics that is only reserved for Imam Hussain (peace be upon him).

Citing a narration from Imam Reza, peace be upon him, who said, “My father, may God’s blessings be upon him, was no longer seen smiling when the month of Muharram arrived.

But he was always sad until the tenth day, and when the tenth day came, that day would become his day of mourning, sadness and crying, and he would say: This is the same day on which Imam Hussain, peace be upon him, was martyred”, Grand Ayatollah Shirazi emphasized that mourning the ten days of Muharram has been customary among the Infallibles since the beginning, and they considered the Day of Ashura as the day of great calamity.

He went on to say that in many hadiths the Infallibles (peace be upon them) have emphasized making an effort to recite Ziyarat of Ashura on a daily basis.

The Supreme Marja highlighted the major themes that Ziyarat of Ashura includes, including lamentations on the sufferings of Sayyed al-Shohada.

“There is a particular hadith that stresses the mention of the suffering of Sayyed al-Shahada and recitation of Ziyarat of Ashura throughout the year,” He further noted.
