The 15th of Shawwal marks the martyrdom anniversary of Hamza Seyyed al-Shuhada, peace be upon him, one of the fiercest defenders of the Messenger of God, peace be upon him and his pure family.
Hamza ibn ‘Abdul-Muttalib, nicknamed Asad-ullah or Sayyed al-Shuhada, was the uncle of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his pure family, who was martyred in the battle of Uhud in the third year of Hijra.
Hamza was one of the important advocates of the mission of the Messenger of God.
According to Hadith, he constantly supported the Messenger of God against the persecution of the polytheists, even before publicly embracing the Faith.
He was one of the dignitaries of the Quraish tribe, and therefore, with his conversion to Islam, Quraysh had to relent their persecution of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his pure family.
He was with the Prophet during the Meccans’ boycott of Muslims in the Abi Talib Quarters (Shi’b), and participated in the Badr and Uhud battles, being martyred in the latter.
His grave in Uhud was a sacred place of visitation for the Prophet and his family.
