Ramadan 10 Marks Martyrdom Anniversary of Lady Khadijah (peace be upon her), Symbol of Faith and Devotion to Islam

The 10th day of the holy month of Ramadan marks the anniversary of the martyrdom of Lady Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (peace be upon her), a central figure in Islam and a symbol of faith, devotion, and sacrifice.

The 10th day of the holy month of Ramadan marks the anniversary of the martyrdom of Lady Khadijah al-Kubra (peace be upon her), revered mother of the Lady of the Worlds and the “Mother of the Believers”.

Historical accounts, including Bihar al-Anwar, emphasize the profound grief of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his pure family) upon her passing, which led him to designate the year as Am al-Huzn (The Year of Sorrow).

Lady Khadijah (peace be upon her) was not only the Prophet’s spouse but also the financial and strategic cornerstone of the early Muslim community. She was the first woman to declare faith in Islam and the Prophetic Mission. During the three-year siege of Shi‘b Abi Talib, her wealth provided food and water to the starving Muslims. Scholars note that she relinquished the comforts of her status as “Princess of Quraysh” to serve Islam, demonstrating extraordinary sacrifice and devotion.

In Shia theology, Sayyida Khadijah’s significance extends through her daughter, Lady Fatima al-Zahra (peace be upon her), making her the maternal ancestor of all the Infallible Imams (peace be upon them). Traditions recount that while pregnant with Sayyida Fatima (peace be upon her), the child comforted her amid the social boycott of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his pure family) and his household.

Lady Khadijah (peace be upon her) is recognized among the Four Perfect Women in Islamic history, alongside Fatima al-Zahra, Maryam bint Imran, and Asiya bint Muzahim (peace be upon them all). Her life exemplifies empowerment through leadership, intellect, and social responsibility, from managing extensive trade caravans to safeguarding the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his pure family) and supporting the faith.

Shia traditions recount that the Angel Gabriel (Jibrail) conveyed Divine greetings to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) and to Sayyida Khadijah (peace be upon her), honoring her status in both this world and the Hereafter.
