Srinagar, a city in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, witnessed a peaceful Muharram procession on Friday as thousands of Shia mourners gathered to mark the eighth day of mourning, Deccan Herald reported. The procession began early morning from the Guru Bazar locality, following the traditional route through Jehangir Chowk and Maulana Azad Road, concluding at Dalgate.

Authorities granted a limited time window for the procession to minimize disruption to daily life, with the traffic department issuing advisories on affected routes. This marks the third consecutive year the administration has allowed the Muharram procession to proceed along the traditional city route.

Adequate security arrangements were in place to ensure the event remained peaceful. Volunteers provided water to participants, and water sprinklers were used at various points to offer relief from the heat.

The eighth day of Muharram holds special significance for the Shia community in Kashmir. The procession had been banned in earlier years due to concerns over militancy and potential misuse by separatist elements, but has now resumed under careful supervision.
