Removal of religious banners from Sayyida Zainab Shrine sparks controversy in Damascus

A sudden move to remove religious banners from the Shrine of Sayyida Zainab (peace be upon her) in Damascus has triggered widespread public and religious outrage. The banners, including the iconic “Ya Zainab” flag raised just a day earlier, were taken down without official explanation, prompting accusations of disrespect toward one of the most revered Islamic shrines in Syria.

The decision sparked a wave of backlash on social media, with many calling it a symbolic affront to the sanctity of the shrine and a threat to its spiritual identity. Observers believe the removal may be linked to administrative restructuring or political efforts to “de-sectarianize” the area, following the circulation of videos promoting the removal of religious symbols.

Sources revealed that the Damascus Countryside Directorate of Endowments recently moved to assume control over the shrine, facing strong opposition from Shi’a community leaders who demand respect for the shrine’s religious character.

In response, a delegation met with Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shara, who reaffirmed the right to religious freedom and the shrine’s cultural identity. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani also expressed concern in a meeting with Shi’a leaders, urging protection of religious sites from political influence.
