Shia Muslims commemorate martyrdom anniversary of Sayyeda Zainab

The shrine of Sayyeda Zainab, peace be upon her, in Damascus witnessed the annual ritual of raising the black mourning flag over its dome, marking the beginning of the commemoration of her martyrdom, which falls on the 15th of Rajab.

This year, the ceremony, traditionally attended by large crowds of devotees, took place in an atmosphere heavy with grief and sorrow.
Local sources reported a noticeable decrease in the number of visitors to the shrine compared to previous years, attributed to Syria’s ongoing security challenges and political turmoil.

This absence has left a void in the hearts of the faithful, who are accustomed to commemorating this solemn occasion near the sacred shrine. Despite the reduced attendance, the essence of mourning remains alive among believers worldwide. This occasion serves as a profound reminder of Sayyeda Zainab’s unwavering patience and sacrifice, as she stood as a beacon of moral and spiritual victory during the events of Karbala.

In Iraq, the holy city of Karbala has become a focal point for the commemoration. These ceremonies aim to honor the values of patience and sacrifice she exemplified during and after the tragedy of Karbala.

The influx of visitors to Karbala from across Iraq and beyond highlights the deep-seated devotion to Sayyeda Zainab’s historical role in upholding justice and preserving the message of Ashura for future generations.
