The Grand Mosque of Herat prepares to be included in the World Heritage List

Afghanistan’s Acting Minister of Information and Culture, Mohammad Tahir Zuhair, said during a meeting with Herat local officials that initial steps have been taken to include Herat Grand Mosque into World Cultural Heritage List.

Minister Zuhair said his trip to the western province was aiming to overview the cultural situation, as according to him Herat has played the most important role in the production of Islamic culture, art and thought.

The provincial deputy governor Dr. Ghulam Dawood Hashemi, asked the Ministry of Information and Culture to pay attention to the reconstruction of historical monuments, strengthening of culture, reconstruction of Herat minarets and its archeological complex as well as the restoration of the historical monuments in the districts.

Meanwhile, the Herat Governor Waheed Qatali welcomed Minister Zuhair and his accompanied delegation to the province and stressed the need for more support of cultural figures and the preservation of cultural assets.

It is noteworthy that the Grand Mosque of Herat is the oldest and largest mosque in Afghanistan with an area of 46,760 square meters.
