According to a study published in the journal Scientific Reports, the presence of humanitarian boats in the coast guard does not affect the trend of refugee migration.
In this regard, researchers say that there is no connection between saving human lives at sea and migration flows.
Based on data from the EU Border Agency, the Tunisian and Libyan Coast Guard, the International Organization for Migration and the Dutch NGO’s rescue operations do not affect the risk-taking level of migrants who cross the sea.
This research identified the exchange rate, increase in the price of goods, unemployment rate, war and weather conditions as the factors which increase the number of asylum seekers who take the sea route.
