Muharram Mournings Begin with ‘Shahi Zari Ka Juloos’

Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, holds significant religious and cultural importance for millions of Muslims worldwide.

It is a time of reflection, remembrance, and mourning, particularly for the Shia Muslim community.

Among the various commemorations during this month, the ‘Shahi Zari Ka Juloos’ stands out as a solemn and emotive procession that marks the beginning of Muharram’s mournful observances.

The ‘Shahi Zari Ka Juloos’ is a grand and elaborate procession that takes place on the first day of Muharram. It is organized by Shia communities in various parts of the world, especially in South Asia, where it is observed with immense devotion and fervour.

The central feature of the procession is the ‘Zari,’ a beautifully decorated replica of the tomb of Imam Hussain, carried atop a decorated vehicle or a palanquin-like structure. The ‘Zari’ is adorned with intricate floral arrangements, colourful fabrics, and symbols of mourning. As the procession proceeds through the streets, devotees clad in black attire follow the ‘Zari,’ reciting elegies, beating their chests, and displaying raw emotions of grief and sorrow.
