UN calls on Bahraini authorities to release pro-democracy and anti-torture activist

After a decade in prison, the United Nations has found that a pro-democracy activist in Bahrain should have not been arrested and called authorities to immediately release him.

In its report released in March, the UN group on arbitrary detention said that, “There is no basis to justify the arrest of Najo Fatil, and upon his release, the Bahraini authorities must investigate his arbitrary detention and the alleged torture.”

Fatil, now 48, was a member of the board of directors of the Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights and a blogger dedicated his efforts for documenting violations when he was arrested in May 2013 for his protest activists.

He mentioned that he was subjected to severe torture for several days that caused him to lose consciousness and had to receive medical care in hospital.
