Tension prevailed in the northern Indian state of Tripura after attacks on mosques and Muslim properties in the state, and 10 incidents of communal violence were reported in four days.
The Indian authorities tightened security measures and imposed restrictions on the movement of citizens in the affected areas.
The attacks come after clashes between Hindu groups and police in Tripura state, as police refused to allow a hard-line Hindu organization called Vishva Hindu Parishad, which is close to India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, to march in protest against the recent violence against Hindus in neighboring Bangladesh.
Although the march was a protest against sectarian violence in Bangladesh, the violence that coincided with it brought to mind the bitter memory of sectarian violence in the region.
Last month, after rumors spread of insulting the Qur’an at a Hindu religious ceremony in Comilla state, Bangladesh witnessed violence in which at least seven people were killed, temples desecrated, and many Hindu homes and businesses were set on fire.
