Pakistan’s Prime Minister comments on publishing offensive cartoons of the Prophet
Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Imran Khan, criticized the French newspaper Charlie Hebdo for republishing offensive cartoons of the holy prophet, calling its action an abuse of freedom of expression.
In his address to the annual meeting of the UN General Assembly, which is being held this year virtually because of the coronavirus pandemic, Khan criticized the growing number of hate crimes against Muslims in the West.
The Pakistani prime minister called on the United Nations to take action to prevent deliberate provocations, incitement to hatred, violence and the scourge of Islamophobia, stressing that “Muslims continue to be targeted with impunity, in many countries, where our shrines are destroyed, our prophet is insulted, the Koran is burned, all in the name of freedom of expression.”
He mentioned events in Europe, including the republication of anti-religious cartoons by Charlie Hebdo, were recent examples.
