US Opinion Article Warns of Rising Islamophobia, Anti-Muslim Rhetoric in Political and Electoral Discourse

An opinion article published by the American website The Statehouse File has warned of growing Islamophobia in the United States, highlighting the increasing use of anti-Muslim rhetoric in political campaigns and public debates, alongside religious stereotyping and questioning of Muslim Americans’ national loyalty.
The article, written by Abdul-Hakim Shabazz, argued that the term “Muslim” is increasingly used in certain political and media circles in a negative and derogatory manner, reinforcing prejudices against Muslim communities.
Shabazz noted that anti-Muslim hostility extends beyond verbal abuse and stereotypes to political campaigns and debates over immigration, national identity and national security, where Islamic identity is sometimes portrayed as grounds for suspicion.
The article also highlighted how collective accusations against Muslims overlook the community’s considerable ethnic, cultural and social diversity, while individuals continue to face harassment and insults because of their religious beliefs.
Warning that the politicisation of religious identity deepens social divisions and undermines equality and religious freedom, Shabazz called for stronger protection of civil rights, greater community dialogue and an end to using religious affiliation as a tool for political polarisation.
