A new mosque has opened in Nakuculo village, in Mozambique’s northern Nampula Province, to meet the religious needs of the local Muslim community and expand access to Islamic education.

The opening ceremony took place on Thursday, October 22, 2026, in Nakuculo, within the administrative area of Nihessiue. Religious leaders, community representatives, local figures and dozens of worshippers attended the event, which was welcomed by residents.

The mosque was established in response to a shortage of suitable places of worship in the village. In addition to hosting daily prayers and religious ceremonies, it is expected to provide educational and religious activities for children and young people, promoting Quranic learning, Islamic values and social solidarity.

The project was completed through cooperation between the Islamic Council of Mozambique and the African Association for Education and Development as part of broader efforts to strengthen religious and educational infrastructure in underserved rural areas.

Sheikh Abdul Majid António, the Islamic Council’s representative in Nampula Province, attended the inauguration and praised the organizations involved. He highlighted the role of mosques as centres of worship, education, community unity and solidarity.

Local Muslim representatives also welcomed the new facility, saying it would help address the community’s religious, educational and social needs while providing children with a suitable environment to learn the principles of Islam.

The opening forms part of ongoing initiatives to expand Islamic institutions in rural Mozambique, improve access to religious education and preserve the religious and cultural identity of local communities.
