Report Warns of Underreporting of Anti-Muslim Hate Crimes in the UK

A recent report cited by Middle East Eye warns that official British police statistics may underestimate the scale of hate crimes targeting Muslims, raising concerns about the protection of Muslim communities and the effectiveness of government policies.

According to the Crime Survey for England and Wales, between April 2022 and March 2025, 1 percent of Muslims experienced racially motivated hate crimes, while 0.8 percent faced religiously motivated offences. In January 2026, a parliamentary inquiry found that only 12.5 percent of Muslim women who experienced hate crimes had reported them to the authorities.

Police figures show that recorded anti-Muslim hate crimes increased by 15 percent in one year, rising from 4,479 to 5,132. Labour MP John McDonnell called for greater recognition of the problem, while Naomi Green, deputy secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain, warned that growing hostility towards Muslims and its normalization in political discourse could undermine efforts to combat hate crimes.
