Germany: Security Checks Delay Appointment of Muslim Military Chaplains

Germany’s Defence Ministry has yet to appoint a Muslim imam to provide religious support to approximately 3,000 Muslim soldiers in the Bundeswehr, according to German media reports. The recruitment process has stalled amid mandatory security checks conducted by the Military Counterintelligence Service.

Defence Minister Boris Pistorius launched a pilot programme earlier this year to provide Islamic pastoral care through individual contracts with imams, following unsuccessful efforts to reach agreements with Islamic organizations. The ministry reportedly received fewer than ten applications but has not completed any appointments.

Candidates undergo security screening to assess potential risks, including suspected extremist links, vulnerability to blackmail and foreign connections that could raise security concerns. The ministry has declined to disclose further details, citing intelligence confidentiality.

Even if appointments proceed, approved imams would reportedly provide services only within Germany and would not accompany troops deployed abroad, leaving Muslim soldiers on overseas missions without this form of religious support.
