Third Mass Grave Examined in Sinjar as Efforts to Document Yazidi Genocide Continue

Authorities have carried out a forensic examination of a mass grave belonging to Yazidi victims in the Khanasor complex of Iraq’s Sinjar district, marking the third such site examined in the area in recent weeks as efforts continue to document crimes committed by داعش against the Yazidi community.

According to informed sources, the forensic operation aims to collect and preserve evidence related to victims killed during attacks on Yazidi communities, while supporting efforts to identify remains and determine the fate of those who remain missing.

The examination is considered an important step in documenting the crimes, establishing the facts and supporting efforts to deliver justice and accountability to victims’ families. The fate of a number of Yazidis who disappeared during the group’s assault on their communities remains unknown.

The latest operation in Khanasor follows similar examinations of mass graves in Sinjar in recent weeks as authorities and specialized teams continue to investigate sites left behind by داعش. The process involves forensic and legal procedures to recover remains, establish victims’ identities and preserve evidence for potential accountability proceedings.

In 2014, ISIS overran Sinjar and other Yazidi areas in Nineveh province, carrying out mass killings, abductions, forced displacement and enslavement. The attacks left behind numerous mass graves across the region.

Thousands of Yazidis were abducted, including large numbers of women and children, while the fate of some missing people remains unknown more than a decade after the attacks.

Authorities and documentation teams continue to work on the cases of mass graves and missing persons, seeking to identify victims, return remains to their families and preserve evidence of the crimes in support of justice and accountability efforts.
