Outrage After Muslim Cemetery Headstones Vandalized in Sydney
——————————————
The vandalism of several grave headstones at the Australian Islamic Cemetery in Narellan, southwest Sydney, has sparked widespread condemnation among Australia’s Muslim community, with calls for stronger protection of religious sites and cemeteries.
New South Wales Police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident and identify those responsible. Authorities have not yet disclosed details about possible suspects or the motive behind the vandalism.
Gamel Khair, secretary of the Lebanese Muslim Association, said the Muslim community was shocked by the incident, describing the desecration of graves as a serious violation and warning that it could heighten concerns over anti-Muslim sentiment in Australia.
Khair also referred to an earlier incident at the same cemetery in 2025, when pig heads and meat were reportedly dumped at the site. He said inflammatory anti-Muslim rhetoric by some political figures could contribute to tensions within the community.
The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils also condemned the vandalism and called for greater efforts to protect religious institutions and sites.
