Franciscan Schools Reopen in Syria’s Idlib After Nearly Six Decades, Promoting Education and Community Dialogue

Two historic schools run by Franciscan friars in Syria’s Idlib province have reopened after nearly 60 years of closure, restoring educational services in the Christian villages of Qunaya and Yacoubiyah.
The Terra Santa schools, originally established in 1958, were restored after years of closure and damage during the Syrian conflict. The reopening ceremony was attended by local civil and religious figures, along with representatives of the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land and the Catholic Church.
Church representatives said the schools aim to provide education for local children and contribute to rebuilding community ties, with admission open to both Christian and Muslim students. Organizers described the initiative as part of efforts to support social cohesion and dialogue among residents of the region.
The schools currently serve around 80 students, with plans to expand capacity after further restoration work is completed. The reopening comes amid broader efforts to rebuild educational infrastructure in areas affected by years of conflict and displacement in Syria.
